The success of Facebook really demonstrates how a little innovation creates massive success...great business ideas

Harvard University drop out, Mark Zuckerberg, had this business idea, founded Facebook. He was blogging and trying to do something to get a girl off his mind.

Zuckerberg adopted the Facebook idea from a site called Facemash. Facemash was a Harvard University version of Hot or Not. Facemash compiles photos from online facebooks, places two photos side by side and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person.

Zuckerberg saw the value of expanding this functionality beyond Harvard.  He commented

“Everyone’s been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard, I think it’s kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week.”

Initially, it was restricted to Harvard students and within a month, more than have the undergraduates registered for the service! Soon after that, Eduardo Saverin (business aspects), Dustin Moskovitz (programmer), Andrew McCollum (graphic artist), and Chris Hughes soon joined Zuckerberg to help promote the website.

In less than 6 months, Facebook expanded to Stanford, Columbia and Yale. Eventually it opened its doors to companies like Apple and Microsoft. Finally in September 2006, Facebook was made available to everyone above the age of 13 years old.

Facebook's success resulted in a 1.6% stakeholding acquisition by Microsoft in October 2007 surmounting to $240million. This indicates a market value of $15 billion!

Great business ideas are all around us. You don't need to be a genius to come up with a 100% new idea. Just a 10% change of an existing idea can result in massive success!
